My obsession through 2013 was tree roots. I was fascinated by the configurations of the roots that had developed to both enable the trees to find nutrients and grip the steep, stoney slope where they were growing. I love working with charcoal in spite of its delicate nature and propensity to smudge. Its also a quick medium to work with meaning I could grab short opportunities to go out on drawing expeditions. The monochrome concentrates the attention on the forms.
